1. Exam Pattern & Selection Process
The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a three-stage process designed to select the most capable individuals for the nation's premier services. Each stage is crucial and tests different facets of a candidate's personality and intellectual capabilities.
Preliminary Examination (Prelims): This is the first stage, serving as a screening test. It consists of two objective-type papers (General Studies Paper-I and CSAT Paper-II) with multiple-choice questions. Marks obtained in Prelims are not counted for the final merit list, but qualifying this stage is mandatory to appear for the Mains. There is negative marking in the Preliminary Examination.
Main Examination (Mains): This is the second and most critical stage, consisting of nine conventional (essay-type) papers. The marks obtained in the Mains Examination (excluding the two qualifying papers) are counted for the final merit list. This stage tests a candidate's in-depth knowledge, analytical ability, and writing skills.
Personality Test (Interview): Candidates who qualify the Mains Examination are called for a Personality Test. This stage assesses a candidate's mental caliber, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, and intellectual and moral integrity. The marks from the interview are added to the Mains score to determine the final merit list.
